I've heard that he's stated that he was envious of the budget that WoW had compared to XIV, but I couldn't find any evidence of it in a reasonable amount of time. ![]() This means these things were not on the budget for the game and had to just be done whenever they could while at work. "We heard the outcry about male Viera being added to the game so the developers did it on their spare time." "We added more hats to Viera/Hrothgar because our dev team really wanted them for the players so they did it on their spare time." To be honest I have a feeling the game is profitable because they don't give them a lot of funding. Driving revenue growth through a variety of channels is the main way to justify the continued reliance on the "outdated" buy+sub approach that the rest of the industry has all but abandoned by now (basically except WoW). it'll be to switch to a different business model that is more lucrative and removes the constraints on revenue growth. No matter how much people complain, the response won't be to go back to the "good old days" where a $40 expansion and $15 sub includes everything there is with no add-ons. but it's kind of like fighting the old war. Not that I disagree with the ideal you're striving for. Besides, the amount gamers are willing to pay for expansions/subs hasn't changed even to match inflation in the last 20 years - increasing it 40% purely to match inflation would be a death knell for the game. The only reason this game is still sub-based is because Yoshida prefers that business model and has enough clout based on his success but, as a publicly-traded company, they're not going to leave MTX money entirely off the table as well. All the top-grossing games are now either F2P with MTX (often lootboxes) or funded substantially by MTX, not purchase/subscription.
